And so to the final chapter of our 2008 fundraising for the YAA - On Sunday 7th June seventeen of our members had a run out to their base at the old Sheffield Airport, in order to handover a cheque for a fantastic £400 and the 27 old mobile phones.
It was with some trepidation we set off , having never organised a run before and having already undertaken two failed reckies! Pete and Kate led the way in the TR7/V8, followed by Richard and Alex in his Spitfire, Julie AND SON in the Audi and myself, Luke and Beth in the Peugeot. We picked up an errant Mike and Jane on the way to the M18 in their Spitfire. The next collection took place at the Morrisons Car Park at Bramley and included Wendy and Tony in the GT6 and Catherine and Jaimie. Arriving at the base just before 1pm we were pleased to welcome Darren’s Mum and Dad, Angie and Neil. We were met by the YAA representative, Abby McClimont, who welcomed us to the base and explained it would be wise to proceed straight out to the helicopter for our photo shoot, as it may get called away again at any point to attend another emergency. She gave us a brief talk about the helicopters whilst we watched it being re- fuelled and also explained that the BBC were in attendance, filming them for the upcoming series Helicopter Heroes. We all gathered around for the photo shoot and were pleased to be joined by the two paramedics. We had initially hoped for a photo shoot including the Triumphs, but this had to be declined on security purposes (it also became very evident later why this had just not been a feasible option). We then split into two groups, one having a closer look inside the helicopter whilst the other one were given a short talk on the service. The attending paramedics were fascinating to listen to and astounded us with the fact that it cost £55K (yes, thousand) to have windscreen wipers fitted to the helicopter! We were particularly amused by a sticker on the ceiling stating “If you have a preferred route, please inform the driver at the start of the journey”!!! Unfortunately our visit had to be cut short when we heard the paramedics radios begin receiving details of an emergency. It was quite nerve tingling watching as the Team swung into action, mapping out their directions on the large map covering one wall. We were then led quickly outside and were able to watch as the paramedics made their final preparations and the helicopter took off. After presenting the cheque and phones to Abby we returned to our cars to find Andy in his Herald who had watched proceedings from the roof. We then embarked on our run to Cusworth Hall, taking in Conisborough Castle and Sprotborough Falls. Cusworth Hall is an historic hall on the outskirts of Doncaster and houses a museum, fortunately it was also the venue for the Traditional Car Club of Doncaster’s annual rally. I was very pleased that we had not lost anyone on route (me thinks due to my outstanding directions)! Although as soon as we entered the car park it all went to pot! We did however re-group to enjoy our picnics in front of the house enjoying the spectacular views (is that really the same Doncaster we know)?! Mike then presented everyone with a plaque commemorating the rally (how does he do it)?! Most of you will recall we chose to support the YAA in memory of Darren Patterson and I am grateful to each and every one of you who contributed to this fantastic amount. The pie and pea night was an outstanding success , but credit also goes to all those who supported the Bring and Buy table, Richards’ Chassis for their very generous donation of £100, Wendy for taking charge of the collection jars (which contained £45), Tony for donating the proceeds from his works football card , and Richard and Julie for their copper collection. All in all a very successful venture, WELL DONE GUYS! |
